Fern Description

A fern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants. They have xylem, phloem, stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants. Ferns reproduce via spores. By far the largest group of ferns are the leptosporangiate ferns, but ferns as defined as monilophytes include horsetails and whisk ferns. The term pteridophyte also refers to ferns.

Care Tip

This plant likes sunshine, but there are several types of fern that do not like it. Many of these plants are used as a hanging plant. Land should be maintained to keep it moist. Water this plant with warm water. This plant is susceptible to insects, keep it clean around the pot.

Description

Dracaena is of the Ancient Greek drakaina meaning "female dragon". It is a genus of about 40 species. Dracaena have a secondary thickening meristem in their trunk. This monocotyledonous secondary thickening meristem is quite different from the thickening meristem found in dicotyledonous plants and is termed Dracaenoid thickening by some authors. This character is shared with other members of the Agavaceae family.
