Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa)  Tuberose

Description

Perennial plant of the agave family Agavaceae, extracts of which are used as a middle note in perfumery. The common name derives from the Latin tuberosa, meaning swollen or tuberous in reference to its root system. It consists of about 12 species. Polianthes means "many flowers" in Greek language. Botanists refer to tuberose as a cultigen, a term that describes a plant that does not occur in the wild. With its long basal leaves and tall stems topped with clusters of fragrant, tubular flowers, tuberose can make a charming addition to your flower garden or home landscape. Tuberose also makes a lovely cut flower that can be used alone or in arrangements.

 Caretips

Always use a clean vase and refresh water regularly.

Heliconia (Heliconia sp)

Description

A genus of about 100 to 200 species of flowering plants native to the tropical Americas and the Pacific Ocean islands west to Indonesia. The flowers are produced on long, erect or drooping panicles, and consist of brightly colored waxy bracts, with small true flowers peeping out from the bracts.

Care tips

Slant cut the stems and stand in fresh water. Stand the flowers in a sturdy vase to ensure they cannot fall over. Don’t allow the temperature to fall too much as black discolouration will occur at lower temperatures.

Gerbera (Gerbera sp)

Description

A flowering plant with large daisy-shaped flowers which come in a variety of colours.

Care tips

Slant cut the stems and leave for at least four hours in fresh water containing cut flower food. Use once the stems have firmed up. Keep the water level low as the hairy stems allow water to creep up and this promotes botrytis attack. Avoid touching the flower; if one petal is pulled out, the entire flower will fall apart.
